What is the Disability Discrimination Act?

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) is federal legislation which aims to promote acceptance of people with a disability and protect their rights.

The DDA gives authority to the Disability (Access to Premises — Buildings) Standards 2010 which mandate the accessible design requirements of buildings in Australia.

Disability access requirements are also included in the National Construction Code (NCC).

What premises do the DDA standards apply to?

Many people assume the DDA standards apply only to new construction, however they are also necessary for existing buildings, including heritage-listed ones.

With a wide range of premises required to comply, it’s not practical for us to list them all here. You are welcome to contact our team who can advise on your specific situation.

While there is plenty of information available online about the accessibility codes, we highly recommend partnering with reputable DDA consultants.

An access consultancy, like Certis, can provide support through all stages of your project. We offer best practice advice for:

  • Planning and design

  • Auditing existing buildings

  • Site-inspections during construction

  • Issuing compliance certificates upon completion

Our role is to ensure compliance with all relevant codes, regulation and legislation. This includes the NCC, DDA, Australian Standards and state-based laws.
